SARS-Cov-2 enters target cells through the (angiotensin converting enzyme) - receptor leading to infections of ACE-2 expressing target cells1 .
ACE2 is an important regulator of the immune response and inflammation. It is expressed in multiple different cell types in lung and heart and at varying levels of expression. Although ACE2 is highly expressed in type 2 alveolar cells, lower level expression is observed in other lung and vascular endothelium cell types. Expression of these receptors is also variable based on donor ethnicity and gender2, 3. It is speculated that ACE2 expression is decreased by age which in turn may lead to higher susceptibility of elder patients to SARS-Cov-2 infections.
