Q:

What is the difference between Lonza’s various renal cell types?

A:

The primary differences between each of Lonza’s various renal cell types are the isolation location and the markers for which each cell types tests positive.

Human Renal Epithelial Cells (HRE; Catalog no. CC-2556): Lonza’s Human Renal Epithelial (HRE) are isolated from the whole kidney and will be comprised of any epithelial cells from the kidney including renal proximal tubule epithelial cells, distal tubule epithelial cells and glomerular epithelial cells. Lonza guarantees that all lots of HRE cells will test positive for pan Cytokeratin.

Renal Proximal Tubule Epithelial Cells (RPTEC; Catalog no. CC-2553): Lonza’s Renal Proximal Tubule Epithelial Cells (RPTEC) are isolated from the cortex of the kidney. Lonza guarantees that all lots of RPTEC cells will test positive for Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma-GTP) further confirming the cell type.

Human Renal Cortical Epithelial Cells (HRCE; Catalog no. CC-2554): Lonza’s Human Renal Cortical Epithelial Cells (HRCE) are a heterogeneous population of epithelial cells isolated from only the cortex of the kidney. Lonza’s Human Renal Cortical Epithelial Cells (HRCE) will be comprised of a population of cells containing both Renal Proximal Tubule Epithelial Cells (RPTEC) and distal tubule epithelial cells. Lonza guarantees that all lots of HRCE cells will test positive for Cytokeratin.
