What is the definition of a chemically-defined medium?

Chemically defined media have a known composition and contain only components of know structure and weight (no extracts or plant hydrolysates, no BSA, HSA) they does not contain any components of animal origin (ADCF). Chemically defined media can contain recombinant proteins. 

Due to current developments in the cell and gene therapy industry, there has been an increased focus on contaminants that may cause unfavorable reactions with patient material.
