Q:

Can I still use Clonetics®/Poietics® Basal Media if it froze/partially froze during shipping?

A:

Occasionally, though more frequently as outdoor temperatures begin to drop, media that Lonza recommends storing refrigerated will either completely freeze or partially freeze during shipping. While we do not suggest intentionally freezing and storing long term any of our media that have a recommended refrigerated storage temperature, we have found that the short term complete freeze or partial freeze that may occur during shipping should not have an effect on the media. To properly thaw the media, Lonza suggests storing the media in a 2-8 °C refrigerator overnight.

If the media is needed immediately, the media can be thawed in a 37°C water bath, however, the bottle would need to be closely monitored, regularly mixed, and removed from the water bath immediately upon thaw.

The biggest issue that could come with freezing and thawing media would be precipitate. If precipitate is noted upon thaw, please contact our customer service department immediately.
