Q:

Can heparin be excluded when culturing endothelial cells? What is the purpose of heparin in the endothelial cell culture media?

A:

Heparin is added because it creates a better environment for FGF binding. Removing heparin for one passage should not have a noticeable effect, however for successive passaging, effects on proliferation may become more significant. It should be noted that the Bovine Brain Extract vial in both the EGMâ„¢ Media and the EGMâ„¢-MV Media contains a small amount of heparin. Please note that Lonza cannot guarantee cell performance if any of the recommended supplements are excluded.
