Yes, insulin can be left out of the SmGM™-2 media for as long as 1-3 passages.

Insulin is beneficial to the cells for long term growth (ie. 4 - 5 passages), however smooth muscle cells do survive quite well short term without insulin.

Insulin is not a mitogen, but instead mostly effects gerontological (getting old) function.
